Viewing conflicts through the eye of Counterinsurgency COIN – Since 2007

A French View of Counterinsurgency 1960

A French View of Counterinsurgency 1960 (but scary how much it applies to today.)
A Must read document by “Roger Trinquier”

How to win against an insurgent!!!

It is an excellent read but I didn’t see much meat on political implementation.
As far as an application to Iraq, I think it is clear that we need to improve in the area that has been so overlooked. This is to say that we need to invest in recruting inhabitants to become informants. This I have translated for today as follows: setup the cells (2-3 men) of informants (these are the inhabitants that we establish as those who are in the know and of tribal/local influence) – district, block, section of block. We (the USA, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other Nations) have been training Police and Army but we need to train and back Informants, Interrupters, Government Personnel, Secret Service, etc. (unless we already are and I don’t know yet). [Updated 8-16-07 – currently I can update this to say we are training our troops in counter insurgency very effectivly but someone needs to train the politicians here and abroad, and law makers, and News orgs, then bring them into the organizational setup and re-establishment of government and law and order to cities and districts which are infiltrated by insurgents] The informants then can call or message any of the following 1-police, 2-military, 3-local government, (later we can expand local government to a more diverse structure to include more ways to help the districts and informants – listed in order of importance of which first to implement i.e., most critical – but not laid in concrete) 4-argicultural (food/water), 5-shelter, 8-employment, 9-medical, 10-educational, 11-secret service. With these services available over time based on informants’ performance, any country can fight an insurgency. [We currently do much of this threw the iraqi government which moves at a snails pace, and their slow response and unresponsive leadership makes for a large area for improvment, on the Homefront the FBI is leading the way to counterinsurgency within the USA. They offer training in counter insurgency and spoting suspisous behavior. I send as many police and gang experts as I can to this training. Ian bach 8-16-07]

Today’s military must adjust and entrench within it’s ranks the governmental influences (as discussed above 1-12) to aid the informants, police, and military. Without this we are fighting blind.

Note: I know the article I linked above is mostly military in nature and Trinquier does mention torture as ok since the combatants are not in military dress, but today that part is out of date. But overall he has written the best on this topic and it’s a blown away feel first time anyone reads it. As he saw modern warfare after WW2 as not being tanks but being terrorist and cells, and it looks like Taliban and Al Qaeda took a page from his book.
Major John Nagl also has been a great source of information on counterinsugency methods. He now writes extensively on this topic. Click his name above to view the complete NY Times article by Peter Maass.
“Maj. John Nagl approaches war pragmatically and philosophically, as a soldier and a scholar. He graduated close to the top of his West Point class in 1988 and was selected as a Rhodes scholar. He studied international relations at Oxford for two years, then returned to military duty just in time to take command of a tank platoon during the 1991 Persian Gulf war, earning a Bronze Star for his efforts. After the war, he went back to England and earned his Ph.D. from St. Antony’s College, the leading school of foreign affairs at Oxford”

About Ian Bach

Independent Online Terrorist Hunter I teach people how to hunt down and shut down the Bad guys web sites. I also teach about the various countries and cultures. Like most cases it is a small group of bsd eggs that in this case call themselves Muslims but in actual fact they are more like how KKK call themselves ",True Christisians". But in both cases / groups they preach a perverted and twisted view a religion. In the case of ISIS, all Qaeda, al Nusra, and the rest of the terrorists who claim to be true Muslims most of these groups follow the Wahhabi teachings. They are almost all Sunni and their goal is global domination. Yet they must be very bad at math and history. Since most Muslims prefer a separation of church and state and also mist are against Shari's Law. Esp the twisted and overly exaggerated form of Sharia Law that the Wahhabi and other bad guys use. I have studied terrorism, insurgencies, and the best tried and proven methods that work to fight terrorism. My Blogs have many links and articles that can show you who are the best and most knowledgeable people in the fields or counterinsurgency and counter terrorism. When I find great practitioner's I always listen to them to find out who they learned from and who they respect and admire. Thus I am always learning new stuff from the best and most successful in their fields of knoeledge. I strive to be an open and ethical source of information, I have met many awesome, kind, caring, and loving wonderful people many who I am close friends with now from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Iran, and many from S.E. Asia which also has a high percent of their populations that are Muslim. We must always strive to be aware people are not any one particular religion via that's what they chose to be, instead most people are a particular religion because that's what their parents and/or county is. I was raised Catholic but because I became Interested in magic ,(illusion - smoke n mirrors) and science which lead me to study many religions, and I would call myself an atheist. Yet sometimes when I lose my keys ZI find myself praying "Hail Marys" and a few "Our Fathers" which most always aides me in finding my keys. My belief is that if I just frantically look around for my krys, good luck it takes me for ever. But by saying these prayers it is like s sort of meditation and my mind becomes more calm, which is why it helps my find my keys.
